There will be no need to hang stoma bags to remove excreta from the body during the treatment of intestinal rupture in accident, cancer and other problems. All India Institute of Medical Sciences (AIIMS), Delhi has developed a cap in collaboration with Stanford Care. This will be used in place of the stoma bag. After this, if needed, the patient will be able to take out the excreta and urine by opening the lid of the cap.
Dr. Nihar Ranjan Das, Professor of Gastrointestinal Surgery and Liver Transplant at AIIMS, told that instead of a bag, a cap will be installed in the stoma created after the problem of the large intestine. This cap has been tested on 50 patients. So far the results have been good. It is pasted over the stoma. It lasts longer than bags. He said that at present this cap can be applied only on those patients who do not have much liquid content in their excreta. In the coming days, the level of cap will be further improved so that the problem of leakage is over. After improving it, this cap can be applied on all other types of stoma patients. Efforts are also being made in this direction.
Cap is cheaper than bag
The number of such patients in the country is more than five lakh. Dr. Das said that their number could be more. Till now these patients use stoma bags. It is quite expensive. This cap will reduce it somewhat. He said that to make it accessible to the poor, subsidy facility should be given on it.
Patients can be made at any age
Dr. Das said that a patient of any age may need a stoma. Till now there was a different feeling in the society regarding this. People hesitated to use it. In view of this problem, the surgery department formed a society. In this, stoma patients raised awareness among the people. Dr. Das said that it is like any other disease. People can spend whole life with it. There are many people in the society who have spent 30-40 years with it.
